Bio

Keith Smith is a freelance guitarist in Calgary, Alberta. He leads the Keith Smith Trio, and is a resident member of  The Amos Garret Jazz Trio, Lorna MacLachlin Quintet, the Penny Sanborn Trio and The Northern Lights Quartet. He also shows up in situations as diverse as The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (Canadian premier of the Ainadamar Ensembles and Arias by Golijov recorded by CBC Radio 2 2008), Phil Dwyer's , Hugh Frazer's and Ross Taggart's performances for The Jazz Is Society of Alberta. He is frequently called for CBE music clinics and many guitar/vocal, guitar/bass duos.

Performance credits over the past several years include a 4-year stint with The Prime Time Big Band, appearances with Hugh Frazer, P.J. Perry, Tommy Banks, Ian McDougall, Ross Taggart, Charlie Austin, Amos Garrett, Bob Day, Cheryl Fisher, Mark Sonksen, Paul Wertico, and also the International Trumpet Guild Conference (2008), with luminaries such as Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Walter White, Andrea Tofanelli, Ingrid Jensen and trombonist, Wycliffe Gordon, Calgary Jazz Orchestra, Maria Schneider.

With the Northern Lights Quartet, he visited Mongolia in 2006, performing at the Ulaanbaatar Opera House, several night clubs in Ulaanbaatar and the Mongolian National Video Awards show on UBS television. In 2008 the visit was repeated and included the first gala concert held by the new Canadian Embassy in Ulaanbaatar and performances in Beijing, China including a concert at Peking University. The Altai Hangai – Northern Lights Quartet collaboration (nl4tet.ca) was born of this trip, and toured several Canadian cities in 2009.
